How do you play hockey?

Hockey is a non-contact sport played between two teams whose objective is to score more goals than the opposition. Games are played for a duration of 70 minutes (2 x 35 minute halves for seniors and shorter periods for juniors). A hockey team comprises ten field players (attackers and defenders) and one goal keeper with unlimited interchanges during the game.

How old do I need to be to play hockey?

Hockey is suitable for all ages from approximately six years of age. Modified and minkey hockey, played on a reduced size field is suitable for players from about 6 years of age. Junior sides continue to under 18 years of age and then enter the senior ranks. There are a number of competitive and social opportunities for players regardless of their playing age or experience.

What equipment do I need to play hockey and how much will it cost?

Players require the following basic equipment - hockey stick, shin pads, mouth guard and sports shoes suitable for grass and artificial surfaces.  A Starter Kit for juniors (includes a stick, ball, mouth guard and shin pads) can be purchased for $35.  Contact individual Club’s for details of playing uniforms.

How much does it cost to play hockey?

Each Affiliated Club in Ipswich sets its own fees however the following information is provided as a guide:

                    For juniors playing in a junior grade - $200.00 to $300.00 for the season

                    For seniors playing in a seniors grade - $450.00 to $500.00 for the season

Note: These fees also include the cost of players insurance and use of fields for training.

When and where does training occur?

Juniors generally train once a week on a week day afternoon for about 1 hour generally between the period 4-6.30pm. Seniors generally train twice a week on week nights for about 1-2 hours generally between 7-9pm. All training is conducted at the Ipswich Hockey Association’s (IHA) Complex at 65 Briggs Road, Raceview.

Do I need to travel to different venues each week for games?

All Club games and training are conducted at Ipswich Hockey’s Complex at 65 Briggs Road Raceview. The complex comprises of 2 artificial surfaces (1 water-based and 1 sand-based) and 8 grass fields.

When are games played?

This varies depending on the grade involved. Modified and Minkey hockey (i.e. 5-8 year olds) is played on Saturday mornings. Other junior games (i.e. under 11 to under 15) are played early on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon whilst senior games can be played on Friday evening (Under 18s, and Veterans) or Saturday/Sunday afternoon or evening.

How long is the hockey season?

The 2007 season commences in March and concludes in September.  The hockey season generally comprises a 4 round competition of approximately 20 fixtures followed by a finals series. Junior hockey is not played during school holidays.
